This single cup brewer has been popular in Europe for some time and over 5 million were sold there. Its brewing system produces a cup of coffee with a smooth, frothy layer on top called crema. Now sold in the US, it uses pre-measured coffee that is packaged in paper discs, called a pod. The machine comes with 2 different sized pod holders: a shallow one that holds one pod for one cup of coffee and a deeper one for two pods for two cups. Some coffee drinkers who like a strong cup of coffee use the larger pod holder and two pods to make one cup.

The removable 20 ounce water reservoir will make 5 small cups of coffee. Brewing time is one minute. The main complaints about the Senseo machine concern the quality of the coffee itself. Some say it tastes "weak", "stale", or "bitter". Coffee in Senseo pods is made by Douwe Egberts but some coffee drinkers have tried Melitta or Aloha Island pods and are happier with the results.

Keurig Elite B40

There are several different models of single cup brewing machines made by Keurig and they are all rated tops in durability and reliability. The brewing systems are identical so the only differences are in the size of the water reservoir and how many cups can be brewed before it must be refilled. The B40 is in the middle of the range and it brews an eight ounce or ten ounce cup from a 48 ounce water reservoir. It brews in 30 to 50 seconds and uses vacuum packed coffee in K-Cups.

These little containers look like a coffee creamer and have been developed and patented just for use with the Keurig brewing systems. In all of the ratings, Keurig is Number One for making consistently good coffee. This has to be partially due to the high quality coffee from respected roasters like Green Mountain, Tulleys, Newman’s Own Organic coffee, Timothy’s, Diedrich and Gloria Jean. There are over 200 varieties of coffee and tea in K-Cups as well as Timothy’s White Hot Chocolate and other cocoa brands. So if you like these brands or have a favorite roast from Emeril, the Coffee People, or Caribou Coffee, you’ll find it as well as a great number of flavored blends.

New Edition Keurig Special is from Keurig Green Mountain

This, however, is the reality of things. In a coffee specialty shop you can find more than 30 different kinds of coffee, more brands that you have ever seen some of which you’ve never heard of and more unique flavors and combinations than any coffee shop could ever provide.

Whenever you buy coffee you get to see a lot of French, Italian, Viennese, and Continental names on the packaging. Usually, these brands are made from darker coffees and don’t really mean that the beans themselves came from these regions.

But instead of the location where they were planted and harvested, these coffee names are dependent on the actual length of time the beans were roasted. For example, Italian roasts are generally darker in color since they have been roasted longer than the Viennese coffee, and so on.

If European names refer to the length of being roasted, non-European names refer to the origin of the coffee bean. So if you see a coffee named Mexican roast, then the beans came from Mexico.

There are other names on coffee labels. One of the more exclusive ones is the Estate named brands. Estate labeled coffees are distinct in a way that the coffee has been grown, harvested and processed in a single farm or estate. Estate coffee growers pride themselves of having their coffees pure.

They never mixed their own estate coffee varieties with other coffees the grew and were harvested in other regions. Probably, one of the most known and trusted estate grown coffee is the Wallensford Blue Mountain brand, which is grown exclusively in Jamaica.

We’ve talked about names referring to roasts and place of origin, now let’s take a look at the various flavored coffee names. Generally, these kinds of coffees are less expensive but are really good nonetheless. Flavored coffee names are the ones that have the words crme, chocolate, vanilla, or any nut or fruit names attached to the word "coffee."

Unlike most of the pure coffees which are roasted black, flavored coffees are roasted medium brown. The flavor themselves are added into the coffee in liquid form.

Blends, on the other hand, are a mix of two or more coffees. The main consideration and certainly the key feature of blends is that the coffees that are mixed together should complement each other.

The aroma, taste, and flavor should never be distinct but at the same time harmonious. Just like estate coffees, there are several well known house blends that have trusted coffee combinations.

There are also various organic coffees and other commercial brand names that have their own distinct flavors. Just remember to choose calmly and don’t get overwhelmed by the number of varieties out there.

What a fantastic machine. These were the first words that came out of my mouth when I got the chance to test drive the Keurig B70 Single Cup Brewer. Let me take you through the process of my realization. The good folks of Green Mountain Coffee contacted me in helping them review this machine. First I was a little reluctant, but what the heck I decided to give it a try. After all, this brewer is not like your normal drip coffee maker that you can purchase at any Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

After getting past that after thought, four days later I had the machine in my procession and the wonderful single serving coffee, coco and tea packets. The brewer came in a well-packaged box and I had no problems setting up the brewer for my first cup of coffee.

I was a little skeptical of having a machine that only brews one cup of coffee, tea or coco at a time. I guess because I have only owned drip coffee makers in my lifetime – never a machine that was so specialized. But I found it to be a blessing. Drip coffee makers force you to make a full pitcher of coffee each and every time. But what happens after that first cup. If that is all you drink for the day then you have just wasted probably a half of gallon of water and a quarter of grinds. How about if you wanted a second cup in an hour? That old pitcher of coffee has been cooking for the past hour. What a nasty cup of coffee. On the other had the Keurig Single cup Brewer only brews one hot cup of coffee at a time. There is no left over that is cooked for hours.

Now, what is necessary when using this machine? Well, first of all you have to start with Spring Water. This is a necessary and needed step. I tried coffee with tap and spring water and I could taste the difference in the coffee.

Next, you will have to buy the single serve cups of coffee. Green Mountain has a wonderful selection of flavors for the strong pallet to the weak pallet. They also have teas and coco. They sent me a mint tea that my children and I loved. It is also a mint tea that needs very little sugar. So, if your health conscious then this tea will be right up your alley.

After getting the coffee or tea, just plug in the brewer, and fill with the desired amount of water. The brewer will tell you if the right amount of water is in the machine. Pop in the single serve cup, pick your cup size and hit brew. It is that easy. I read out tells you when to hit brew and when the cup of coffee or tea is ready. And once you have the cup of coffee the manufacturer recommends that you rinse out the machine by brewing a cup without the single serve cup. This cleans out the brewer for the next person. I love this system but I had 1 problem, well it’s not really a problem just something I wish would be addressed.

I found that I had to put more that one-cup of water in the despiser in order for it to brew. I thought this defeated the purpose of brewing one single cup of coffee at a time. But all and all I absolutely loved this machine. I would definitely recommend this machine to all my friends without any thought.

Tassimo has their machines made by both Bosch and Braun. There are less total models available and while there are cheap options, on the whole they are a bit more expensive than what Keurig offers.

I have the Tassimo. Its similar to the Keurig machine, but i feel like it has more selections and better brands of coffee to use. It uses T-discs.
